From 23 to 27 September, Barcelona will once again fill its streets, squares, parks and beaches for La Mercè 2026. Over five days, the city’s Festa Major will bring together nearly five hundred activities, including popular culture, concerts, street arts, dance, family-friendly events and fire shows.

La Mercè is structured as a collection of festivals spread across different venues throughout Barcelona. Its programme includes BAM, Música Mercè, Mercè Arts de Carrer and the traditional celebrations that bring giants, castellers, dragons, sardanas and cercaviles back to the city every September.

In 2026, the festivities will also have a particularly close connection to the coastline. Bogatell Beach will host two nights of concerts and become the new setting for the Piromusical, bringing one of the most anticipated moments in Barcelona’s festive calendar to the Mediterranean.

The Festa Major That Transforms Barcelona

La Mercè is dedicated to the patron saint of Barcelona and has formed part of the city’s history since the 19th century. Following her official recognition as patron saint in 1868, religious and popular celebrations began to take place in her honour during September.

Over time, the festival acquired a civic character. The 1902 edition helped establish a model of Festa Major based on the recovery of different expressions of Catalan popular culture, while the return of democracy consolidated La Mercè as an open, participatory celebration closely connected to public space.

Today, tradition and contemporary creation come together for several days across historic buildings, major avenues, parks, music stages and locations overlooking the sea.

Popular Traditions, Fire and Life in the Streets

Giants and cabezudos, castellers, sardanas, traditional dances, grallers and figures from the festive bestiary return to the streets of Barcelona during La Mercè. The cercaviles, which are linked to the city’s historic processions, now bring together popular culture associations and street arts companies. During the Festa Major, these figures move through different parts of the historic centre accompanied by music, dance and theatrical performances.

Fire is another of the defining symbols of the Festa Major. The correfoc brings together devils, dragons and beasts that advance through percussion, sparks and pyrotechnic structures, making it one of the most widely followed events each year.

The Opening Address of La Mercè 2026

The festivities will officially begin on Wednesday, 23 September, with the opening address delivered by Antoni Falgueras, master wine merchant and the fourth generation to run Celler de Gelida.

The speech will take place at 7:00 pm in the Saló de Cent at Barcelona City Hall. Closely connected to the Sants neighbourhood and a family business with more than 130 years of history, Falgueras has dedicated his career to wine culture, the promotion of Catalan wineries and specialist retail.

His appointment connects the opening of La Mercè with a Barcelona shaped by its neighbourhoods, family businesses and the passing down of trades from one generation to the next.

La Mercè 2026 Reaches All Ten Districts

The programme will once again extend across Barcelona’s ten districts. The celebration will not be limited to Ciutat Vella or the usual major venues, but will incorporate new locations such as Plaça de les Glòries, Plaça de Sarrià and Plaça Comas.

On Thursday the 24th, the central day of La Mercè, Parc de les Glòries will host family activities and street arts performances. This year’s programme will also feature a music and dance production created for the Gaudí Year and the centenary of Park Güell, with the participation of several of the city’s folklore groups.

This citywide programme will make it possible to discover La Mercè through different routes, from traditional events in the centre to parks, concerts and cultural venues in other neighbourhoods.

The Correfoc Unveils a New Gate of Hell

Passeig de Gràcia will once again host the correfoc. In 2026, the route will unveil a new Puerta del Infierno, the pyrotechnic structure that marks the arrival of the devils, dragons and figures from the fire bestiary.

The percussion, sparks and movement of the colles will transform the avenue into one of the most intense settings of the Festa Major. Anyone approaching the route should follow the organisers’ instructions and wear suitable clothing and footwear in the participation areas.

Shanghai, Guest City of La Mercè 2026

Shanghai will be the guest city of La Mercè 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of its twinning agreement with Barcelona. It will also be the first Asian city to take on this role during the Festa Major.

More than one hundred artists from Shanghai and Barcelona’s Chinese community will participate in a programme bringing together street arts, traditional music, jazz, dance, circus and pyrotechnics.

Despite their differences, the two cities share a particular relationship between tradition and modernity, as well as a festive culture in which music, public space and fire play a prominent role.

Dragons, Acrobatics, Dance and Chinese Music

The Traditional Chinese Rolling Lantern Performance will take part in the Seguici Inaugural and the Toc d’Inici with a dance associated with protection, community strength and good fortune. Barcelona’s festive bestiary will share the spotlight with dragons and traditional Chinese figures, creating one of the most symbolic encounters of this year’s programme.

The line-up will also include the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe, which will bring its circus and acrobatic performances to Parc del Fòrum. Dance companies will appear at venues including Parc de la Trinitat and Parc de l’Estació del Nord.

A Celebration Between Tradition and Innovation

Shanghai’s presence will also reveal its contemporary side through jazz, electronic music and new forms of performance. The Shanghai Restoration Project will combine electronic pop, jazz and dance alongside Angelo Manhenzane and Tebza Majaivanet at the Jardins del Doctor Pla i Armengol.

Pyrotechnics, present in both Chinese and Catalan festive culture, will provide another point of connection. The guest city will participate in the International Fireworks Festival and present a drone show in the skies above Barcelona.

The Music of La Mercè 2026

Music will once again be one of the main pillars of the Festa Major. The programme will occupy squares, theatres, gardens, former factories and stages near the sea, with genres ranging from jazz and electronic music to rumba, flamenco, rock, soul and symphonic music.

BAM will focus on emerging projects, experimentation and artists rarely found on conventional circuits. Música Mercè, meanwhile, will combine popular traditions, productions created specifically for the festival and performances by national and international artists.

BAM 2026: New Voices and International Sounds

Barcelona Acció Musical will begin a new chapter in 2026 with a programme curated by Marta Mei and Aina Pociello. Risk, sonic dissent and aesthetic exploration will define an edition featuring numerous artists who have yet to perform in Barcelona.

Plaça de Catalunya will host the R&B and rap of Bia Ferreira, the psychedelic rock of Brama, the Tuareg blues of Imarhan and the experimental jazz of Daoud, alongside projects such as Sandra Monfort and Sandré.

Moll de la Fusta will bring together artists from different Mediterranean and European scenes, including Islandman, Isla Kume, Juventude and Gala y Ovidio, the new project by Raül Refree and Aida Tarrío. Rambla del Raval will complete the route with artists including I Am Roze, Uzi Freya, Restinga and TootArd.

The programme will expand with concerts at the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm and the tenth edition of BAM Acció Cultura Viva at Fabra i Coats.

Música Mercè: From Rumba to Jazz and Symphonic Music

Música Mercè will feature 34 concerts in which musical heritage will enter into dialogue with electronic music, improvisation and different contemporary expressions.

Avinguda de la Catedral will be one of its main venues, hosting the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Sabor de Gràcia, María Terremoto, Aterciopelados and Maika Makovski. It will also present a show dedicated to La Barcelona Flamenca, directed by Lluís Troquel and featuring guitarist Chicuelo.

Teatre Grec will welcome artists including Luísa Sobral, Nacho Vegas, La Paloma and Senegalese group Def Mama Def. Symphonic music will return to Plaça Major de Nou Barris, while Plaça de Sant Jaume will host a night of habaneras created especially for La Mercè.

La Mercè Moves Closer to the Sea

Barcelona’s coastline will play a central role during La Mercè 2026. Bogatell Beach will once again host some of the festival’s largest concerts and, for the first time, will also become the setting for the closing Piromusical.

During the final weekend of September, music, pyrotechnics and outdoor plans will extend the festival’s route from Barcelona’s neighbourhoods and squares to the seafront.

On Friday, 25 September, the Bogatell Beach stage will host concerts organised by ELS40, featuring Aina Machuca, Miki Núñez, Buhos and Sexenni.

The programme will continue on Saturday the 26th with Estrella Damm’s Mediterranean stage, where La Pegatina, Svetlana and Al·lèrgiques al Pol·len will perform.

At the same time, Avinguda de Maria Cristina will host concerts organised by RAC105 and Europa FM, with artists including Maria Jaume, Els Amics de les Arts, Els Catarres, Paula Koops and Leire Martínez.

La Mercè’s Piromusical Moves to Bogatell

One of the major changes in 2026 will be the relocation of the Piromusical. Due to the transformation works taking place at the Fira Montjuïc site, the show will temporarily leave its usual setting on Avinguda de Maria Cristina.

On Sunday the 27th, Bogatell Beach will host the fire and music celebration that will bring La Mercè to a close. The new location will allow the show to be viewed from the coastline and other points across the city, with the sky and the Mediterranean forming part of the setting.

The move will make this year’s closing event particularly distinctive and reinforce the role of Barcelona’s seafront during the final days of the Festa Major.

From La Mercè to the Mediterranean at CDLC Barcelona

After exploring the different venues of La Mercè, Passeig Marítim in Barceloneta offers a meeting point between the city and the Mediterranean.

At CDLC Barcelona, the day can continue on the terrace with a culinary proposal combining Asian, Arabic and Indian influences with Mediterranean touches. Dishes designed for sharing accompany a relaxed meal that can begin during the final hours of daylight and continue into the night.
